In The Community
Benest & Syvret are particularly proud of their record of giving service to the community in Jersey by provision of services or skills to charitable groups or individual members of the community.
- The Firm has a recognised reputation for working for charitable clients. It continues to assist Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, Cancer Research UK, RNLI, National Trust for Jersey, Jersey Cheshire Home as well as smaller local charitable trusts. Benest & Syvret continue to offer willing assistance to those seeking to incorporate or establish a new charity.
- The Partners have regularly given up their time to local organisations. By way of example, Philip Syvret has recently stood down after having served for some five years as a member of the Jersey Consumer Counsil. During that time he promoted legislation and campaigns to improve consumer awareness. He has recently been reappointed by the States of Jersey as Deputy Chairman of the Health and Safety Tribunal. He also presently sits on the Board of Governors at Victoria College.
- The Partners also give of their time to improving the provision of legal services in Jersey. Advocate Nina Benest has for many years been the Secretary of The Jersey Family Law Association. Mr Philip Syvret is a member of the Jersey Law Society main committee responsible for administration of all affairs of the Law Society including disciplinary and fee complaint matters brought against members of the profession.
- The Firm has consistently supported the maintenance of the Legal Aid System in Jersey and the honorary tradition of Advocates and Solicitors alike in the provision of legal services to those members of the community who cannot afford full legal fees. Over and above its responsibilities under the Legal Aid Scheme the Firm has taken on many cases on a pro-bono basis. These have varied from simple personal injury matters, through to covering one case representing some 30 families who were faced with eviction from the housing estate in which they lived, all of which have seen a successful outcome for the firm's clients. - By way of a community based project the Firm was heavily involved in the establishment of the Community Savings and Credit Bank, the first time a Credit Union was established in the Island. Dealing with the preparation of all documentation and liaison with all of the financial authorities to achieve the establishment of the bank was a challenging but ultimately successful enterprise.
