Guide to Legal Aid
In Jersey for the first 15 years of their professional life Advocates and Solicitors give up their time, at a reduced or no cost, to those people living in Jersey who cannot afford legal services. The service is given at the Lawyers own cost and save in exceptional circumstances there is no funding provided by Government to support this service.Page top Entitlement
Those entitled to the benefit of the scheme are provided with a certificate by the Acting Bâtonnier which requests a lawyer appointed on a rota basis to deal with each matter. Legal Aid is available for some civil litigation and most types of criminal litigation.
Entitlement to a Legal Aid Certificate is strictly means tested. Details of the relevant criteria can be downloaded from the Jersey Citizens Advice Bureau website a link to which appears below. If you think that you may be entitled to Legal Aid we would be happy to discuss your circumstances with you and guide you in respect of making an appropriate application. Because the scheme works on a rota basis you cannot choose a lawyer to be appointed for you under the Legal Aid Scheme. The next available lawyer on the rota will be appointed to deal with your case.
