Starting a New Job

The Stresses of Starting a New Job

There can be many reasons for applying for a new job – maybe you have been made redundant, you have been unhappy in your previous role, or you are stepping up on the career ladder. Whatever the reason, as you set out for your first day in your new workplace it is quite easy (and perfectly understandable) to be a little apprehensive.

If that feeling comes to you it would be good to remind yourself that you beat all the competition to win your new job. Clearly your new employer thought you were the best person to fill the role. Instead of that uneasiness, feel proud and congratulate yourself on that success.

Equally however you do need to plan ahead. If there is no uniform, does the company have a dress code? A simple enquiry to the HR department for guidance as to what is appropriate is easy to make.

On your first day make sure you turn up in plenty of time. In that way, you will feel less flustered which may add to those feelings of apprehension. Remember that everyone, no matter how important they now are in the business, once upon a time had a first day in their job too. Concentrate as introductions are made and remember your colleague’s names. Sometimes repeating the name as you are introduced helps the name stick in the mind. Take time to familiarise yourself with your surroundings and talk to others. Take the excuse of asking for directions which will allow you to introduce yourself to people. Your colleagues may be nervous about a newcomer too and would be happy to have a chance to engage.

Showing enthusiasm and interest in the role is important, but take care not to set yourself unrealistic goals early in the process, particularly if the role is completely different to one which you have undertaken before. Some businesses will allocate a mentor to be your buddy to go to with general queries. Make use of that facility and if you are unsure of anything don’t be afraid to ask. I know that as a boss I would much rather be asked a question then have to deal with the mistake!
