Stress Awareness Month

The Death of a Family Member

It is probably trite to say that the death of a loved one is the most distressing moment in anyone’s life. Depending on the circumstances there will be a range of emotions – sadness, surprise, anger, relief, guilt – many of which will compete with each other. At times it may well be that you feel that you will never be able to smile again. The old adage that time heals is never truer than in the case of the loss of a friend or family member.

The way in which everybody deals with grief will be different. There is no right way to deal with it and everybody’s response is unique. Many people will have lost a friend but will have no knowledge of what you as an individual are going through. Some people feel numb and despondent for months. Others will feel bereft for many years. Accept advice and support of friends but recognise that only you will know how best to deal with matters.

Try to understand that there will be days when you simply can’t face the world and make allowance for that. There will be other times when you feel stronger. Learn to recognise the triggers that give you strength and focus on those and use them to help you move on.

Bereavement counseling is available (ask your GP for details)Talking things through, although initially painful, is invariably the way to release emotions and allow the opportunity for healing. Undoubtedly many tears will be shed but reminiscing about happy memories can be positive when you are overwhelmed with negative feelings.

Ultimately your love for a person never dies and they will always be special to you. As time passes, most people are able to live alongside their loss with a person living in their memories.

Going forward certain dates will always trigger those memories – birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas – keep those dates in mind and prepare for them in a positive way, perhaps by being with friends or seeking other’s support. Remember it is difficult to enjoy the here and now if you are yearning for the past. You need not forget but small steps to move on in due course will help the healing process.
